Dropping a Nap

For the last 2 weeks, Isis' naps have been all messed up. She would only sleep about 30 minutes for the first nap and then less than an hour for the 2nd nap. Something just wasn't quite working. It was like she wasn't quite tired enough & she was just taking cat naps to get her through the next couple hours. We finally decided to try dropping a nap. I realized I'd rather her take one really good 2+ hour nap than 2 naps that were starting to be less than 45 minutes each.

Today, instead of putting her down at 9:30am for her first nap like we normally do, we went out for some family errands! We went to Toys R Us to get her a table to color & draw on because she's been trying to color on everything & rather than her color on my kitchen table, we decided to get her own Isis-sized table! We picked this one. It has 3 setting for size so it can grow with her & it wasn't horrible colors that clashed with my house! Then we went to Joseph Beth Booksellers to get her a book, which they didn't have (boo). We finally went to the grocery to buy some food! By the way, I have some great children's book & new recipe posts coming up inspired by my outing today!

We came home, fed her lunch around 11:00am & then put her down for a nap around noon. It's 1:40pm & she's been sleeping like a log since we put her down! She wasn't too fussy this morning, so it seems like this is what she needed. Now she'll get one really great nap & hopefully feel better all the way around!! We'll see! It's just day 1 and I've found in my last 14 months of motherhood that everything has a transition period.

How did your nap transitions go?
When did your child drop to 1 nap a day?

UGH what good timing this post was. I am wanting Amelia to drop from 4 to 3 but it is NOT going well. I've read so much on this and I tried to max her wake time, btu then she only slept 20 mins. Sigh.

It seems all these people think she'll just magically start sleeping longer. We've been in 45 min naps for WEEKS. Any additional advice?

(PS-she's a champion night sleeper - generally 7ish-730ish with one night waking to eat and go right back to sleep).

It is hard to work through transitions, but it sounds like it wasn't too bad for Isis. She's definitely at the age for nap consolidation.

YAY! I loved when Ivy was ready to drop that AM nap. I did exactly what you did.... read into your baby's needs! Mommies know best! :)

wow, that's a huge shift from 9:30. amazing! we've been transitioned/ing for about a month now. levi now takes one nap from about 10:30-12:30. he still gets really tired before bedtime, so the evenings are tricky. i've sometimes held him off until 11:00 or 11:15 but sometimes it bites me in the butt. sometimes it will get a 2 hour nap, sometimes an hour nap (yikes - NOT good), and sometimes a 2.5 hour nap. i was having to do early bedtimes for a few weeks (6:00ish or 6:30) but we're now back to 7pm-7am nights and the one 2-hour nap per day. i wish it was a little longer, but it's working for us so i can't complain! levi has always seemed to be on the "lighter" side of sleeping. i never did get huge massive naps and was definitely sad when he started refusing the afternoon nap at 11.5 months! but now that he's well and truly adjusted it's working great. i try to also put him in a cot with toys and books around 2:30-3:00 for an hour so that he'll be used to an afternoon quiet time even if he doesn't sleep. i figure i'll especially need that when bub #2 shows up! he doesn't always last the full hour, but many times i can go in half-way and give him some new toys (the others are tossed on the floor by then!) and he'll make it the hour. my goal is to get him to one hour without me coming in and giving more toys... so that i can actually nap during that hour! :)

Wow, it sounds like Isis is definitely ready for 1 nap! Sounds like a really smooth transition for her so far, too. That's great. It took a couple of months for Q to get into a good groove with one nap.

To both you and Adriel, usually as they get more mobile, you can push the nap back a bit more and they will nap for longer. Well, my experience at least.
